Sometimes I wish I were an octopus. Holding the lens, holding the
carving tool, and holding the pink stuff too is a challenge to me.

Ideas please?

I tried freezing the pink stuff to see if it would retain rigidity
better for carving areas such as lettering or areas needing precise
details. It didn't really have the desired effect, but it did make my
hand cold while I carved. I would suggest just obtaining a magnifying
lens instead and replacing the carving blades often.

I've found that carving letters really helps a lot with my poor hand,
to work on techniques of good, straight lines and smooth curves.

letters - either gouged out or raised up - one really sees what needs

give to it. Maybe it makes it firmer and less squishy? How long do
you keep it in? Is a freezer just too much? I suppose a microwave
would be a bad idea.

Hi boxers:

Even though my carving is still in it's infancy, I use one of those
model magnifier/lamps which are on a long arm and clamps to a table.
The magnifier is a round approx 6" diameter circle with a round
fluorescent bulb under it so it's a light and a magnifier. The sell
for about $50 at craft stores or online.

Have fun and just get out there & box!!!

Mark Pepe

PS. Thanks to all for the birthday wishes to Sue yesterday.
She was very touched.

I have a lens on a stand with a battery-powered light in the handle.
I found it in the embroidery section of Rag Shop. Maybe someday I'll
upgrade to one of the clamp-on, bendy-arm, light/magnifiers you get
in the drafting tools section of a good arts or office supply store.

There are several on ebay, but I can't vouch for the quality. Do a
search on "Magnifying Glass Lamp Light".

See, & I just enjoy my "bumpity" letters. I figure it proves I
carved it by hand. Hee! :)

I put letters on the first stamp I carved, using an eraser and just an Exacto
knife. I swore then that I'd never put letters on another stamp.

Fast forward about 10 months to this week, when I'm carving a stamp to plant
in a local "natural area." Yep, it's got letters. Never say never, I
guess.

They're a bit bumpity, but not too bad. But I do have to have the
magnifying glass! Someday I'll get one of those cool ones with the light built in,
but for now, I have to hold it.

Thanks to all who responded to my question about a magnifying lens.
Red, I guess I tried the wrong keywords on ebay...I wasn't successful at
all. Wes' link to froogle looks like a winner for sure. Mark and Aud, I
will look at the hobby and craft stores and see what is there.

Another place to look for those lamps is in sports stores. Fly fisherman use
them to tie flies with. Cabela's has some nice ones!

Ah, this is a subject I was going to inquire about a few months ago. I guess
I didn't want to show my age, a whopping 41, with failing eyesight. The doc
says I need bifocals, ugh! I got this one from the Staples website and love
it because I can unplug it and just put it away.

Hope this helps.

Or you could be extremely near-sighted like me. All I have to do is take off my glasses and
raise the carving stuff to within an inch of my nose!

Real disadvantage when it comes to finding boxes, though, so I depend on the rest of my
crew for that!

Hi,
New to letterboxing and the bb. It's probably already been posted,
but you can get a magnifying lamp that attaches to the side of a
table at any large art supply store. I have had one for years and it
frees up the hands.
